The buccal fat pad, was popularized by Bichat, is a well-known structure that occupies a predominant position in the facial middle third at the cheek level. Its dominance is more noticeable during childhood, and as the individual ages and the close structures are modified, the fat pad decreases.
In patients with a heavy or chubby face this improvement can be achieved by a relatively simple procedure called Bichat fat pad resection. It gives this depression just under the cheekbones that some patients like.
This fat pad can be accessed thru an intraoral incision like the one used to insert cheek implants and easily be done at the same time.
Risks are also very rare and include nerve injury and bleeding.
