Blepharoplasty Procedure in Norwalk, Connecticut

Dr. Laurence Kirwan. is one of the most experienced Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons in Norwalk, Connecticut, and in the entire country. He is a recognized international leader in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He offers a superior level of knowledge, care and understanding to help you achieve the look you desire.

Blepharoplasty is the most widely performed cosmetic surgery in the U.S. right after breast augmentation, liposuction and rhinoplasty. The popularity of blepharoplasty isn’t surprising. After all, the surgery is relatively straightforward and in the right patient, the results can be dramatic, correcting the appearance of hooded lids, fatty deposits or baggy skin on either the upper or lower lid. The key to achieving optimal results lies in ensuring you choose an experienced and skilled surgeon and in making sure you’re a good candidate for eyelid surgery.

As a top-ranked eyelid surgeon, Dr. Kirwan has significant experience treating the delicate tissues of the upper and lower lids as well as determining which patients are the best candidates for cosmetic eyelid surgery.

Conveniently Located: Every patient is a VIP. For your blepharoplasty appointment, you will see Dr. Kirwan himself at every single appointment. Who is the ideal candidate for blepharoplasty?

Generally speaking, blepharoplasty can be an ideal option for women and men who:

  • have droopy, saggy upper or lower eyelids or who have fatty deposits or “bags” in the lids due to issues like age-related changes, sun exposure, tobacco use or even genetics
  • are in good general health
  • are nonsmokers
  • have healthy eyes
  • have realistic expectations of what blepharoplasty can achieve

The most satisfied patients are those who understand how the procedure can help them address their specific concerns, so it’s very important to discuss your goals during your consultation appointment to help ensure you experience the best results and to determine if a different type of procedure might be better for your goals and expectations.

Who is not a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

In some people, eyelid surgery may be contraindicated, which means they have a condition that precludes them from undergoing surgery. These issues may include:

  • certain chronic eye conditions like dry eye syndrome
  • some eye diseases like Graves disease, an autoimmune disorder that’s also called thyroid eye disease
  • prior eyelid surgery
  • severely drooping brow areas (also referred to as brow ptosis; different types of procedures like brow lifts may be better at addressing brow drooping)

Are you a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

Of course, the only way to know for sure if cosmetic eyelid surgery is right for you is to schedule a consultation appointment so you can be evaluated. During your office visit, you’ll be asked to provide a complete medical history including results of any eye exams, details about any chronic medical conditions you have, medications you’re taking, prior eye surgeries and even your lifestyle and habits. If you haven’t had a recent eye exam, you may be asked to have an exam so you can be screened for issues like dry eye that could cause complications with eyelid surgery. And of course, your eyelids and the surrounding areas will also be carefully examined to determine the extent of drooping, bagginess or other issues that may need to be addressed. All of this information will be used to help determine if blepharoplasty is the best option for you or if another approach might be a better choice.

It’s also important to note that while blepharoplasty only affects the eyelids, the procedure can be combined with other procedures like BOTOX® for crow’s feet or brow lifts to raise a sagging brow to address issues affecting multiple areas of the upper face. All of these issues can be discussed during your consultation.

Surgical Technique

Eye-lifting removes fat and extra skin from the upper eyelids. The corrugator muscles which cause frown lines, are removed alone or as part of a brow lift. This is done through incisions behind the hair line, and it will help to smooth out frown lines, taking away that angry look.

The lower eyelid fat is most often removed through the inside of the lower eyelid and the skin is smoothed with a chemical peel. In patients with excessive skin of the lower eyelid or who may not be suitable for a chemical peel because of their skin type, an external incision is made below the eyelashes and the extra skin is removed.

Is there a typical age to have an eye lift?

40 plus. Most people benefit from eyelid surgery from middle age and beyond. However, some people have family traits of excess skin in the upper eyelids and bags under the eyes. They will often benefit from surgery at a younger age, even in their 20’s.

Do you look tired after a good night’s sleep? Eyes are the windows of the soul. People see you through your eyes. If your eyes look tired, they will distract from the rest of the face. Because eyelids age before the face, if you are having a facelift then this is a good time to have an eyelift if you have not had previous eyelid surgery.

Surgery takes one to two hours depending on whether you are doing the upper or lower eyelift alone or together. Upper eyelid surgery may be done under local anesthesia only. Lower eyelid surgery is done under local anesthesia with conscious sedation. Both surgeries are performed in the office. Stitches are usually removed after 5 days. Dr. Kirwan recommends that you keep your head elevated and apply ice packs for 48 hours after the surgery. Eyelid exercises are recommended to reduce swelling and to speed up your recovery. Bruising lasts for 10 to 14 days and can be easily hidden with makeup and sunglasses. You can go back to work within the week.

Don’t confuse this operation with a browlift that is often combined with an eyelift. The lower eyelid may also be tightened at the outer corner. This prevents dropping of the lower eyelid and gives a more youthful appearance. Chemical peels help to smooth out wrinkles in the lower eyelid.
