Liposuction

Refining the contours that stay put no matter what you do.

Overview

About the procedure.

Liposuction removes localized pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise. It can refine the abdomen, chest, flanks, thighs, arms, and other areas, but it is a contouring procedure rather than a substitute for weight loss.

For men, the most common areas are the chest, tummy, and love handles — an android distribution of fat that can remain despite a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction removes fat beneath the skin, not visceral fat around the organs, and is planned around your anatomy and goals.

Dr. Kirwan may combine liposuction with BodyTite radiofrequency tightening, Morpheus8, gland excision for gynecomastia, or additional contouring when that creates a more balanced result.

Typical recovery
Return to work in about 3 to 4 days
Compression garment
Day and night for 2 weeks, then daytime for 2 weeks
Final result
Usually visible at 6 to 12 months
Incisions
Approximately ¼ inch; stitches are usually not required

General estimates only. Technique, health, and healing affect timing; your surgical plan will be specific to you.

The procedure options

Considered, not templated.

  • Liposuction alone.

Power-assisted or manual liposuction removes and contours localized, diet- and exercise-resistant fat. The procedure typically takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the areas treated.

  • Liposuction with BodyTite and Morpheus8.

For mild skin laxity, stretch marks, or existing scars, radiofrequency energy and microneedling can be combined with liposuction to improve both contour and skin quality.

  • Chest contouring.

When male breast enlargement includes glandular tissue, liposuction may be paired with gland excision through an incision around the areola to create a more defined, masculine chest.

  • Additional contouring.

Inner thighs, pubic area, abdominal etching, and fat transfer may be considered when appropriate. The number of areas determines the overall operating time.

Recovery & aftercare

Room to recover.

Healing is a process, not a deadline. This is a general outline to discuss with your surgical team.

  1. The first week

    Ease back into work.

Swelling, bruising, and drainage of blood-stained infiltration fluid are expected. Many patients return to work after 3 to 4 days, depending on the extent of treatment and their work.

  2. The first month

    Wear your garment.

Compression is worn continuously for two weeks and during the day for another two weeks to support healing and contour.

  3. The months ahead

    Let the contour settle.

Early changes appear soon after surgery, while swelling continues to resolve and the final result develops over 6 to 12 months.

A little clarity

Good questions.
Honest answers.

There is no question too small to bring to your consultation.

Ask us a question
Can liposuction help me lose weight?

No. Liposuction is designed to contour localized areas of resistant fat after weight is reasonably stable. It is not a treatment for obesity or visceral fat.

Is liposuction effective for men?

Yes. The chest, abdomen, and flanks are common treatment areas for men, and the plan is tailored to male anatomy and the desired definition.

Will I meet Dr. Kirwan personally at my consultation?

Yes. Every patient is a VIP. From your first consultation through your last follow-up visit, you see Dr. Kirwan himself at every single appointment. He is available to you before, during, and after your procedure.

Where is surgery performed?

Most procedures are performed under local anesthesia with conscious sedation in Dr. Kirwan’s AAAASF-accredited surgical suite in Norwalk, Connecticut. Patients whose medical history makes office-based surgery unsuitable are treated at Greenwich or Norwalk Hospital on a same-day, ambulatory basis.

How do I know whether I am a candidate?

Candidacy depends on your health, anatomy, and goals, not a specific age. The only way to know for certain is a one-on-one consultation, where your medical history and aesthetic goals are reviewed and the appropriate options are explained.

How do I schedule a consultation?
