Key Highlights

  • One of the key elements of an attractive male is a strong chin.
  • A strong chin is also associated with a tight neckline.
  • Chin implants correct a weak chin and improve facial aesthetics.
  • Chin implants are made of molded silicone and come in different sizes and shapes.
  • The ideal chin should be two-thirds of the length of the lower face, as measured from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin.
  • A chin implant can be done as a stand-alone procedure or at the same time as a neck-lift or a facelift.
  • Square shaped chin implants give a more masculine appearance.
  • Surgery is done through an incision under the chin. The scar is usually unobtrusive.
  • Recovery takes about 7 days.
  • It takes several months for the tissues to heal around the implant, to see the final result.

Chin Implants for Men

Male chin implants are different from chin implants for women. The implant itself is square and angular, rather than rounded which, in women, preserves the oval shape of the lower face.

Where Did Your Chin and Neck Go?

A weak chin is often hereditary but may also be a sign of aging. Men with a retrusive chin frequently have an obtuse cervico-mental angle (CMA). The CMA is the angle between the chin and the neck. The ideal is between 90 and 105 degrees. There may be no CMA with one continuous line from the chin to the neck.

Timing of surgery depends on the cause. Men with developmentally weak chins may consider a chin implant as soon as skeletal growth is complete; in their late teens and early 20’s.  The timing of surgery for loss of chin projection with aging or weight loss depends on personal choice. Typically, these men have a chin implant with a neck-lift.

When to Consider Chin Implant Surgery

A chin implant is a cosmetic procedure, meaning it is typically done for aesthetic enhancement. This is a highly personal decision. This increasingly popular procedure can be a great solution for many men who:

  • Have a developmentally small chin with inadequate projection and have completed their skeletal growth.
  • Have loss of chin projection associated with aging or weight loss.
  • Want to correct a weak chin and an obtuse CMA.
  • Have loss of fat in the chin fat pad area
  • Would like to correct the aesthetic proportions of their face and treat signs of facial aging.
  • Would like additional procedures such as a neck liftfaceliftbrowlifteyelift, and nasal rejuvenation or rhinoplasty

Surgery may be combined with other procedures such as liposuction and body contouring of the abdomen and love-handles.

Chin Implant Procedure Options

Dr. Kirwan may perform one of several techniques, such as:

Chin implant alone

  • Ideal for patients who have no other associated problems.
  • Incision is made under the chin.
  • Outcome: chin has stronger profile and more projection.
  • Length: 1 hour.

Chin implant combined with a neck lift

  • Best method for patients who have inadequate projection of the chin as well as a poorly defined neck contour (obtuse CMA) due to hereditary development or from the effects of aging or weight loss.
  • Incisions are made under the chin and around the lower part of the ear in front and behind the ear and in the scalp behind the ear.
  • Platysma neck muscles are tightened in the neck beneath the chin and at the side of the neck behind the ear.
  • Fat may be suctioned out of the neck area
  • Extra skin is removed, and the neck and jaw line are smoothed and tightened.
  • Outcome: chin has improved projection; CMA is more acute. The jawline is sharper
  • Length: 2 to 3 hours.

Chin implant combined with a facelift and neck lift

  • Ideal for patients who have laxity of the neck and upper face as well.
  • Incisions are made under the chin, in the scalp above the ear, around the ear and in the scalp behind the ear. [link facelift page]
  • Outcome: A more rested, more youthful look.
  • Length: 3 to 4 hours.

Chin implant combined with other facial procedures such as:

Additional Body Contouring

  • Recommended for patients who have areas of diet and exercise-resistant fat
  • Great option for patients who want to target other areas.
  • Multiple small incisions are made to suction fat and contour the abdomen and love handles.
  • Length varies depending on the number of additional areas; approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Men Chin Implant Results and Recovery

It may take some time to fully recover and see your final results after a chin implant. However, many patients can return to work in about one weeks and resume other activities (like playing sports and working out) in approximately four to six weeks.

Following surgery, you may experience swelling and bruising. To help reduce swelling, Dr. Kirwan will suggest that you apply ice compresses for the first 48 hours after surgery and in the morning when waking for 10 days.

Be sure to follow any instructions provided by Dr. Kirwan and his staff before and after your cosmetic surgery to ensure a smooth procedure and recovery.
