Two is better than one: The power of PRP and microneedling

At Kirwan Plastic Surgery, we combine nonsurgical treatments to enhance their effectiveness and patient comfort. From our office in Norwalk, Connecticut, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Laurence Kirwan treats individuals from across the globe (including many famous faces) with a blend of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and SkinPen® microneedling. This innovative treatment boosts volume, lifts lax skin, softens wrinkles, and tightens in just 30 minutes with no downtime or discomfort.

The power of PRP

Popularized by the Kardashians and Victoria’s Secret models alike as the “vampire facial,” PRP is a natural treatment that is derived from the patient’s own blood. A tiny sample of blood is spun in a centrifuge to render a nutrient-rich concentrate. When applied to aging or damaged skin, PRP triggers beneficial healing processes. The growth hormones present in the patient’s plasma also aid in building collagen. Our bodies produce less of this firming protein as we age.

Results reveal themselves in as little as one week. You’ll notice continued improvement for up to 12 months as more collagen is replenished. This twist on the facial has helped teens and seniors of all skin types regain their confident appearance, clearing acne and noninvasively lifting and plumping skin.

PRP can also be precisely applied to the scalp to treat hair loss. Just three treatment sessions have been associated with dramatically improved density, appearance, and thickness.

Making the most of treatment with SkinPen®

SkinPen® presents a type of device that is used to perform microneedling treatment. This type of treatment involves applying a handpiece to a targeted area. This applicator is equipped with many tiny “micro-needles.” The needles precisely and gently create small channels in the skin. These “controlled injuries” stimulate wound healing. It is this process that helps to even out pigmented skin, support greater elasticity and firmness, and soften wrinkles, fine lines, scars, stretch marks, and visible pores.

At other offices, providers may apply skin-loving ingredients like PRP via dozens of injections with a Botox® needle. By using microneedling, we can deliver the plasma deep below the skin’s surface painlessly. This approach also distributes PRP more evenly than with the needle technique and boosts the collagen-building process for enhanced results.
