Key Highlights

  • Liposuction can remove diet and exercise resistant fat but is not an alternative to weight loss.
  • However, liposuction does make it easier to control your weight with diet and exercise.
  • You will see significant results with a single surgery rather than multiple sessions with non-surgical treatments,
  • Skin retraction varies with age and the degree of skin elasticity.
  • Younger patients with no history of major weight loss, have better skin elasticity and a greater degree of skin contraction after liposuction.
  • Liposuction will not improve stretch marks.
  • The time to consider liposuction is when stubborn areas of fat such as chest, tummy and love handles fail to improve with diet and exercise or non-surgical treatments such as CoolSculpting and Evolve Trim.
  • Liposuction is effective at all ages for diet and exercise resistant fat.
  • Weight gain after liposuction, will reduce the final surgical result and vice versa.
  • For men, the areas that are least responsive to diet and exercise are the chest, tummy, and love handles.
  • Fat, particularly, in the tummy and love handle areas, is known as truncal or android obesity
  • Truncal obesity is related to cardiovascular disease and Type II Diabetes and liposuction may improve these risk factors.
  • Liposuction is often done on multiple areas during the same surgery.
  • Surgery is done through ¼” incisions. Stitches are usually not required.
  • Recovery takes about a week. You can return to work after 3 to 4 days.
  • After surgery, a garment is worn under your clothes. This is worn for 2 weeks, day and night and then during the day for another 2 weeks.
  • Although you will see changes soon after surgery, it can take 6 to 12 months to see the final result.

Liposuction for Men

Male liposuction is different from female liposuction. The common male areas of diet and exercise resistant fat are chest, tummy (abdomen) and hips or love handles. This is known as an android distribution whereas women have a lower body or gynoid distribution. Female diet and exercise resistant fat preferentially affects thighs hips and buttocks.

Lipodystrophy is the term used to describe these localized areas of diet and exercise resistant fat.

Where Did Your Fat Go?

Diet and exercise resistant fat is seen at all ages from late teens onwards. Young and old tend to have similar problem areas. Liposuction can make it easier to control your weight with diet and exercise. Aging, alcohol consumption (beer gut) weight gain, high glycemic food, and a couch potato sedentary lifestyle with little exercise, are the major causes of lipodystrophy.

Middle aged men typically notice lipodystrophy of the chest, tummy, and hips. The French call truncal adiposity avoirdupois, referring to a paunchiness or protruding belly. Liposuction cannot remove visceral or omental fat which is deep to abdominal wall muscle and is situated around the intestines, Liposuction removes fat deep to the skin and superficial to the deep muscle layer.

When to Consider Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure, meaning it is typically done for aesthetic enhancement. This is a highly personal decision. This increasingly popular procedure can be a great solution for many men who:

  • Are 18 years of age and older.
  • Want to get rid of diet and exercise resistant fat.
  • Have excessive fat in the chest tummy and love handles.
  • Have localized areas of excess fat.
  • Would like to reduce areas of diet and exercise fat without having to lose so much weight that they lose it from areas with a normal fat distribution such as the face. Further, fat lost from the face with weight loss may not return with weight gain.

Surgery can be combined with other procedures such as BodyTite radiofrequency tightening of the superficial fat dermal skin layers and Morpheus micro-needling radiofrequency for further tightening of the skin and treatment of stretch marks and abdominal scars. Male breast and chest liposuction is often combined with excision of glandular tissue.

Surgery is normally performed under conscious sedation with local infiltration anesthesia. Dr. Kirwan will perform the surgery as discussed in your consultation.

Liposuction Procedure Options

Dr. Kirwan may perform one of several techniques, such as:

Liposuction alone

  • Ideal for patients who have no other associated problems.
  • Small incisions are made to infiltrate local anesthetic solution and to suction fat.
  • Fat is suctioned from areas infiltrated with local anesthetic.
  • Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) is the most common liposuction technique.
  • Manual liposuction is also used without PAL for finer contouring and control.
  • Outcome: areas of diet and exercise resistant fat are reduced and contoured
  • Length: 2 to 4 hours.

Liposuction combined with a BodyTite and Morpheus

  • Best method for patients with skin laxity, and/or stretch marks or pre-existing scars.
  • Small incisions are made to infiltrate local anesthetic solution.
  • BodyTite radiofrequency energy (heat) is applied under the skin through small access incisions, followed by PAL or manual liposuction.
  • Morpheus micro-needling is applied to the overlying skin for further tightening and treatment of stretch marks and scars.
  • Outcome: areas of diet and exercise resistant fat are reduced and contoured. Skin laxity and scars are improved.
  • Length: 2 to 4 hours.

Liposuction combined with excision of breast gland (gynecomastia)

  • Ideal for patients who breast enlargement or gynecomastia.
  • Incisions are made in the lower half of the areola or around the nipple.
  • Breast tissue is removed through the incision.
  • Liposuction is performed to contour the chest.
  • Fat can be processed and re-injected into the chest muscle.
  • Outcome: a masculine looking chest with a smaller areola and a more defined pectoral muscle.
  • Length: 2 to 4 hours.

Additional Body Contouring of other areas such as inner and outer thighs, pubic area, abdominal etching, fat injection to the buttocks

  • Recommended for patients who have additional areas of diet and exercise-resistant fat such as inner thighs and pubic area.
  • Option for patients who desire etching of abdominal muscles or an Abercrombie Fitch look. Not suitable for all patients.
  • Option for patients who have lost volume in the buttocks and want more definition and projection of the buttocks (more common in women).
  • Length varies depending on the number of additional areas; approximately 1 to 4 hours.

Liposuction Results and Recovery

It may take some time to fully recover and see your results. However, many patients can return to work in a few days and resume other activities (like playing sports and working out) in approximately two weeks.

After surgery, there will be oozing of blood-stained infiltration fluid for 24 hours and you will need to protect your furniture and bed with plastic sheeting. You may experience swelling and bruising. To help reduce swelling and contour the areas of liposuction, Dr. Kirwan will suggest that you wear a compression garment continuously for two weeks and then during the day for a further two weeks.

Be sure to follow any instructions provided by Dr. Kirwan and his staff before and after your cosmetic surgery to ensure a smooth procedure and recovery.
