The projection of your belly and its size and shape about the rest of your body can affect everything from how your clothes fit and how you feel about how you look to your posture and the toll that such excess takes on your back and other parts of your body. It’s no surprise, then, that the “tummy tuck” or abdominoplasty surgery has such a high rate of patient satisfaction, given the importance of the abdominal area to our overall physique and appearance and our general health, well-being, and function. Kirwan Plastic Surgery of Norwalk, Connecticut, is pleased to delve further into three examples of what this popular procedure can do for your body and life.
Pregnancy and childbirth can take a toll on your entire “system.” Women tend to get frustrated that their bodies aren’t bouncing back after these major life changes. The reality is that no number of crunches and targeted exercises, even with the most nutritious diet, will adequately resolve some of the changes brought on by giving birth to a child. Notably, while the usual good diet and exercise can reduce fat cells, it cannot tighten extreme laxity and soften pronounced stretch marks associated with pregnancy and what comes afterward. This is where the abdominoplasty comes in to remove excess fat and lift and/or remove lax or saggy skin.
Abdominoplasty
Pregnancy can also cause the abdominal muscles to separate. This condition is called rectus diastasis. When the rectus abdominus muscles are stretched to the limit during pregnancy, they eventually widen and split. You are then vulnerable to poor or weakened core strength. This can affect the appearance and function of other body parts beyond the abdominal region. With the resulting limited core strength and poor posture comes a rounding or hump-like appearance to the back. Your back can also end up overcompensating functionally, which results in chronic pain as this area is now overly stressed and strained. We can repair this extremely common problem by tightening and realigning the abdominal muscles to promote the strength and sustained stability of the abdominal and pelvic region.
Abdominoplasty is not just for younger or new moms. It may also be appropriate for men and older women. So many factors can contribute to lax skin, stubborn pockets of fat, and poor muscle tone. Many of these changes occur as a result of aging and hormonal fluctuations. They can also arise due to yo-yo dieting. In youthful and highly elastic skin, the tissue may bounce back optimally to conform to a slenderer physique. When elastin and other structural components are lost with time, the skin may be stretched and stay that way. Again, this change cannot be combined with diet and exercise alone.
