At Kirwan Plastic Surgery, Dr. Laurence Kirwan and our team in Norwalk, Connecticut, strive to preserve the nuances in features that make your face distinctive and unique. Generally, though, attractive faces are well-balanced. Features are in beautiful proportion with each other. When certain portions of the face are (or become) enlarged, they can dominate other attractive features. For instance, a “heavy” lower jaw may detract from a delicate nose or sparkling eyes. The Botox® that you may know for the treatment of frown lines and crow’s feet is so much more than that – it may be used for facial slimming and recontouring, too, effectively renewing and supporting that beautifully balanced appearance.
While Botox® has many applications, it generally works in much the same way regardless of what we are treating. Botox® is injected into the precise muscles that are responsible for your concern. Once injected, the botulinum toxin within Botox® goes to work to relax these treated muscles. It disrupts muscle activity to soften lines and creases associated with such muscle contractions. These muscle contractions may also be responsible for changes in the shape of your face and the contours in the lower portion of your face. By relaxing these muscles, patients notice improvements in the appearance of a bulky, heavy, or oversized jawline.
SEE THE TRANSFORMATIONS & BEAUTIFUL RESULTS
An overly prominent jawline may be caused by benign masseteric hypertrophy. Oversized chewing muscles characterize this condition. These muscles may become enlarged due to excess stimulation or activity. For example, habits and behaviors such as bruxism (teeth grinding and jaw clenching) put these chewing muscles to a significant workout. The more any muscle is used, the bigger it grows. In this case, masseter muscles may grow so large that they dramatically alter the shape of the face. A naturally oval face may become boxy or square-shaped, and may overwhelm other or softer features of your face. By injecting Botox® into the masseter muscles, they cannot contract. When these muscles can’t contract, they fail to produce the activity responsible for bulking up the lower part of the face.
As with all Botox® applications, the results from treatment are gradual. You may notice initial relaxation within the first week, while subtle changes in facial contour may be revealed in the following one to two weeks. “Peak” results are typically noticed after three months. After around six months, the effects from Botox® start to wear off, at which time you should contact Kirwan Plastic Surgery to schedule your “touch-up” injections.
