Liposuction has never been safer. It presents a predictable way to remove fat among those patients who are otherwise healthy but have stubborn “trouble spots” around the midsection, thighs, buttocks, and other areas. At Kirwan Plastic Surgery, we are further elevating the standard of care. Due to our unique technologies and approaches, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Laurence Kirwan further minimizes blood loss, bruising, and other undesirable effects from surgery, maximizing comfort and fat loss. We have spotlighted a partial list of four ways these approaches stand out from other Norwalk, Connecticut, and beyond practices.
Also known as 3-D Liposculpture, 3D-SLS is an advanced method of liposuction skillfully performed by Dr. Kirwan. It differs from conventional techniques in that he precisely and delicately removes fat in the superficial and intermediate layers. This approach is associated with better outcomes, notably improved contours, and more favorable skin retraction. With conventional suction-assisted and ultrasonic-assisted lipo, only the deeper fat is removed. When superficial fat remains, patients experience undesirable rolls, bumps, and other surface irregularities as this outermost, heavy layer falls following deep suctioning.

Due to our use of 3D-SLS, more patients can benefit from liposuction, including those with concerns over loose skin. Those with moderate lax skin can enjoy a tightening effect because the tissue retracts afterward. Those patients might have even more loose skin following surgery with the other techniques mentioned here (suction and ultrasonic).
In addition to 3D-SLS, Dr. Kirwan performs SWT. The “super-wet technique” involves applying anesthetic and saline solution in the same (or double) the volume of projected fat loss. In doing so, he supports a better experience and safer outcomes. This approach is associated with less bleeding and bruising risk. Other methods, such as tumescent lipo, involve injecting large volumes of fluid as an anesthetic before suctioning. Due to the introduction of large amounts of fluid, the heart and other organs can be stressed, which causes potentially dangerous complications. We can minimize or avoid these complications with the SWT and other techniques.
A welcome addition to the liposuction procedure is the MicroAire® Powered-Liposuction System. This approach involves using a special device that reciprocates (rather than rotates) to move the cannula or tube through which the fat is removed via suction. This system/device is also uniquely designed to reduce the force needed to remove fat, particularly from resistant or fibrous areas such as the back and chest. It is easier on the patient and easier on the surgeon. Since it is not an ultrasonic device, no heat is generated. The risk of burns is avoided to support the safest treatment.
