Bags under your eyes may make you look more tired, less healthy, and older than you actually are and feel – and perpetually so! You may always look fatigued, unhealthy, and “aged.” Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place for VIP treatment and an exceptional experience when addressing undereye bags with cosmetic eyelid surgery. Kirwan Plastic Surgery is led by a globally recognized, board-certified plastic surgeon and innovator in advancing the latest surgical techniques and technologies, Dr. Laurence Kirwan. Patients travel from around the world to benefit from Dr. Kirwan’s expertise at our center in Norwalk, Connecticut.
If you have saggy, puffy areas under your eyes, you may be a good candidate for lower blepharoplasty. While the upper blepharoplasty focuses on the upper eyelids to improve “hooding” and vision impairment associated with sagging, the lower blepharoplasty is designed to address the lower eyelids and concerns such as under-eye bags, creases, puffiness, and even dark circles (discolored “tear troughs”).

Dr. Kirwan will discuss your specific needs and the techniques to address them. In general, though, surgical incisions or openings are made to access underlying tissues. Once accessed, he may trim the excess fat to improve the appearance of bags and puffiness. For older patients or those with significant loose skin, too, this excess tissue may be removed. Dr. Kirwan may tighten the underlying ligaments and muscles. Fat may also be repositioned in the hollow tear trough below the eye. By repositioning fatty tissue, he creates a smooth transition from the mid-face to the cheek area. Keep in mind that not all fat is good. Fat contributes to a youthful, contoured, and vibrant appearance. As we age or due to the effects of UV/sun exposure, which accelerates the aging process, fat is redistributed, resulting in visible bulges, hollows, and dark discoloration. This aspect of treatment focuses on maintaining the existing fat and adjusting it to achieve a renewed, lifted appearance.
During a consultation, Dr. Kirwan examines your areas of concern. He also reviews your overall health and medical history. This examination, review, and discussion with you informs his treatment recommendations, which may include cosmetic eyelid surgery or even a range of nonsurgical options available at our center in Norwalk, CT, to “wake up” the lower eye region. Generally, your eyes and the rest of your body should be in good health. With all treatments, it’s essential to have realistic expectations about how they can enhance your appearance and quality of life. For instance, while long-lasting, age-related changes in the lower eyes may result in the need for further treatment later in life. We cannot completely stop the clock, but we can “reset” it. We can also discuss alternatives for individuals with chronic dry eyes and other conditions that may normally preclude them from undergoing a blepharoplasty procedure.
