So much can be said without a word. Your eyes tell the world a great deal about how you feel and even about your internal health. If your eyes convey that you are older than your years or are perpetually tired and angry, let the office of Kirwan Plastic Surgery introduce you to blepharoplasty. Our team in Norwalk, Connecticut, is pleased to acquaint you with how this lower and upper eyelid treatment has helped individuals from around the globe renew their look. In doing so, they have gained a new outlook on life.
The term “blepharoplasty” is derived from the Greek words “blepharon” and “plassein,” which refer to “eyelids” and “forming or molding,” respectively. This is a surgical procedure to rework the tissues surrounding the eyelids. Aging and resulting changes deep within the skin can cause the eyelid tissues to lose elasticity. The upper eyelids may sag to the point that they affect your field of vision. The forehead and eyebrow may also be involved, contributing to the hooding. The lower lid may also appear puffy as fat and other tissues sag and move southward. These bags can significantly detract from the youthful, vibrant appearance of the eye area. Blepharoplasty may be an appropriate treatment for upper and/or lower eyelids as needed.

Every patient’s experience with this surgery is different. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Laurence Kirwan, will discuss the most appropriate techniques for you during a consultation and follow up with a thorough evaluation of your concerns and medical review. Generally, the upper eyelid lift involves Dr. Kirwan accessing the problematic tissues through well-placed openings or incisions. As needed, he then removes the excess (be it fat or skin) from the upper eyelid region to effectively rejuvenate your appearance and restore your full field of vision in severe cases.
Similarly, the fat or “bags” in the lower eyelids may be removed, too. In this case, Dr. Kirwan may access the excess tissues through the inside of the lower lid. Sometimes, external incisions are made underneath the lashes, and excess tissue is removed that way among patients with more extensive needs.
Yes! Dr. Kirwan does this all the time to optimize treatment results. For instance, with the upper eyelid treatment, an eyebrow lift may be used to soften frown lines between the brows and smooth the forehead. The corrugator muscles contributing to these vertical expression lines may also be removed. Incisions are well-camouflaged behind the hairline. For treatment of the lower lids, Dr. Kirwan may smooth the surrounding skin with a chemical peel. This resurfacing is not appropriate for all skin types. This is where external incisions may come into play for patients with severe puffiness and bags. Other related options include injectable BOTOX® Cosmetic to resolve expression lines like crow’s feet around the eyes. So, there are myriad nonsurgical and surgical possibilities to complement your blepharoplasty.
