BBL: What’s in a name

BBL stands for the “Brazilian Butt Lift.” It gets its name from a pioneering Rio de Janeiro-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Ivo Pitanguy. BBL involves transferring fat from one part of the body to the specific points in the buttocks to enhance their fullness, projection, and size.

A “twofer” treatment

Fat transfers or injections for BBL are combined with liposuction. Via the liposuction technique, excess fat may be suctioned from stubborn fatty pockets on the thighs, hips, tummy, and other areas. The harvested and prepared fat is then injected into specific points of the buttocks to support your most desirable results and align favorably with your natural physique and other body parts and features. In doing so, we can both shrink stubborn fat deposits and augment lax or depressed areas for a full-body transformation that looks natural and is derived from natural tissues (from your own body).

Steps to a better butt (and more!)

First, anesthesia is administered. BBL is generally performed under general anesthesia. Once you are fully relaxed and comfortable, Dr. Kirwan uses liposuction techniques to harvest fat. Fat is suctioned from the hips and thighs to contour the outline of the buttocks. The fat is then processed. Next, the purified fat is introduced to syringes. The fat cells are then reinjected into precise points of the butt to get the improved size, shape, and contours that you desire. Injections can also be applied to “fill in” buttock dimples for a smooth and appealing appearance. Treatments may also vary if they are combined with additional liposuction procedures, such as the removal of fat from the knees and inner thighs.

Rest, recovery, results

Unlike other surgical procedures, the full results from BBL are seen once the associated swelling has completely disappeared. Some bruising is also to be expected. It is important to follow any instructions for after-care provided by Kirwan Plastic Surgery. Notably, we will provide you with a support garment to be worn ’round-the-clock for two weeks (and daily for another two weeks). It is also important to take it easy for at least seven days, then you can return to work. Resist the temptation to play sports and work out for ~three weeks because engaging in such activities too soon can interfere with healing and diminish the results from treatment.
