Why consider implant removal
The motivations to have implants removed are as varied and unique as our patients! Should you remove your textured implant?
The FDA recommends that textured implants only be removed if you are experiencing symptoms due to the relatively low risk of developing implant-related cancer. These potential trouble signs range from lumps and swelling to pain and sudden changes in the shape of the breast (including asymmetry). Of course, this is general guidance. Only an experienced and qualified specialist like Dr. Kirwan can properly evaluate your breasts and implants and then help you determine the best and healthiest path forward should concerns arise regarding textured implants and BIA-ALCL.

Surgical techniques
Generally, surgery may be performed by removing the implant as well as the capsule that forms around the implant. This process, capsulectomy, may be appropriate for individuals with thickened or calcified capsules or other symptoms and diagnostic findings that suggest BIA-ALCL. Otherwise, the removal or exchange of the implant for smooth implants (without capsulectomy) is a perfectly appropriate choice for many women who do not have complications such as capsular contracture. For those whose implants are removed without replacement or exchange, Dr. Kirwan performs Breast Auto-Augmentation, which involves rearranging the patient’s own breast tissue to augment the shape and position of the breasts.
