Your nose is an unmistakable feature of your face, which is great when you like its size, projection, and overall appearance. But this fact is more than disconcerting when you are perpetually worried about how your nose sticks out rather than beautifully harmonizes with the rest of your face. By leaning into the expertise of one of the world’s top plastic surgeons, Dr. Laurence Kirwan, you get the nose you have always wanted, which complements your face! Kirwan Plastic Surgery is happy to provide a glimpse into rhinoplasty (“nose job”) at our internationally recognized aesthetic center in Norwalk, Connecticut.
No two such procedures are the same. But all rhinoplasty treatments involve surgically altering the tissues of the nose. In fact, the term is derived from the Greek words “rhino” and “plassein,” which refer to the “nose” and “molding or forming,” respectively. While your nose is actually made up of many subtle parts, and there are numerous features within this central feature of the face, two of the most common reasons to undergo this surgical procedure are to correct a large nose that is out of proportion with the rest of the face and that projects too much. An attractive face is generally symmetrical and balanced; a big or prominent nose detracts from that beautiful symmetry and balance.
Here again, the techniques employed to bring out the best in your nose and face will depend on your needs, the type of correction desired, and your unique anatomy and goals. For a cosmetic rhinoplasty that is not associated with other health needs or not folded into other treatments, Dr. Kirwan generally makes openings inside the nose. From there, through these incisions, he may reduce the size of the nasal tip, lower the nasal bridge, elevate the tip (by trimming the end of the septum between the nostrils), narrow the nasal bones, and more. Each of these needs is associated with different techniques, which we can discuss at greater length and as appropriate as your surgery approaches.

The keyword here is “patience.” It can take several months for swelling to go down completely and for you to see the full results from your rhinoplasty taking shape. Over the nearer term, though, any packs placed within the nostrils will be removed, and a splint will largely be worn on the nasal bridge for up to a week. Dark circles under the eyes and bruising can last for up to two weeks and may persist longer among those with darker complexions. Do not be alarmed when rebound swelling occurs after the splint is removed. You may be able to return to work within a week and can get back to your “usual” activities in around two to four weeks. Some (contact) sports should be avoided for longer (up to six weeks). Kirwan Plastic Surgery will advise on ways to manage these side effects, which are just a small part of the journey to a lifetime of confidence in your renewed look!
