At Kirwan Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Laurence Kirwan and our team in Norwalk, Connecticut, help patients from across the U.S. and around the globe move forward from trauma, sicknesses, injuries, and other conditions that can take such a toll on one’s emotional health and overall well-being. We accomplish this with a range of exceptional reconstructive surgery procedures.
To “reconstruct” is to build or assemble something again. Similarly, in medical circles, reconstruction re-forms the structure or corrects a defect in tissues or parts of the body. As you might imagine, these procedures are highly personalized. It may require several phases or stages to get the most optimal result, restoring or achieving a balanced appearance and healthy function. The effects of reconstructive surgery are particularly powerful and rewarding, though. These treatments often have the ability to dramatically transform our patients’ lives for the better. It is no understatement to say this, as the conditions or situations that lead to the need for restorative treatment are often traumatic and can take an extreme emotional, mental, and physical toll.
Plastic surgeons like Dr. Kirwan may restore injured, scarred, burned, and otherwise traumatized and damaged parts of the body to health, with a natural and confidence-boosting appearance and function. Experts in reconstructive plastic surgery procedures also correct many congenital anomalies. Some of the most common congenital conditions babies may be born with include cleft palate/cleft lip.
A few examples of other conditions that may be treated by plastic surgeons (and their respective treatments) include:
Due to the diverse range of needs and associated interventions that fall under the umbrella of “reconstructive surgical expertise,” the specific steps and experiences with treatment can vary substantially from patient to patient. In general, all treatments start with a consultation. Because of the nature of traumatic injuries and conditions, we may walk you through a multi-phased treatment plan that includes initial repair. This step might include initially sealing wounds and repairing underlying structural components/tissues. We can further “remodel” these tissues with time, and as your body heals.
Adhering to any and all instructions prior to treatments and afterward minimizes further risks of complications, including scarring. Scars themselves represent a concern that we treat. We also perform special surgical techniques to minimize scarring. The key is to view this process as a partnership. Your compliance with instructions supports proper healing, so you can finally move forward from past trauma and not let previous sicknesses, conditions, and injuries define you.
It is not an overexaggeration to say that Dr. Kirwan has a global reputation.
